Management 101

How do you manage? Well that is simple question to a complex answer. In short, it depends on what management style you choose, or which one fits the type of company/business you are managing in a way.

Me personally, I always found a collaborative management style to work well. When I was manager of a mortgage company, I would manage using multiple styles of management.

For example, when I managed the telemarketing section of the mortgage company, I made sure to keep the rules clear. Telemarketers were to stay on the phones during work hours, and making calls or in the process of making cold calls. Of course we had breaks and lunch breaks which is standard for most companies.  If an issue arose where for example if the telemarketer was not doing making the minimum amount of calls or generating the minimum amount of leads per day or week Then the procedure would be to take them aside in the private meeting room and discuss with them what was going on. I would suggest having a file on them with notes which you keep within the file if this arose. I would try and see what the cause of their decline in performance. Sometimes employees go through a slump or a cold streak, this can happen. You should give them a chance and evaluate their performance specifically. Perhaps they need a refresher course training, or maybe a short one on one session to refresh their skills to get back to their performance level again. I would pay special attention to this employee until their performance improved again. If not, then of course other steps would be taken.

Remember, as a manager you are there to manage your specific department or company. You are  part of a whole. Your function as an overseer and also as a developer of people should be handled with care and attention. I always try and improve the staff which I manage. Having an attitude of “I am above you” or “better than you” is not helpful in the world of management. As a manager you are there with a special pedestal, in order to help the employees, make sure everything runs smoothly in your department which fits into the whole puzzle piece of the company.
